Coefficent of Inbreeding (COI) of the Curly Horse
ABCR checked the average COI of the ABCR registered Curly Horses in the closed book. We used the reduced formular of Wright for it, based on 5 generations. Here are the results:
All ABCR closed book entries, regardless if still alive or not:
Full book: 1.72% (4,848 animals) / Blood book: 0.88% (765 animals) / Closed book total: 1.61% (5,613 animals)
Current ABCR closed book breeding population (no geldings, not deceased, DOB > 1.1.1994):
Full book: 2.14% (2,182 animals) / Blood book: 1.12% (553 animals) / Closed book total: 1.95 % (2,735 animals)
For some indication, find the average inbreeding COI of other horse breeds below (Schäfer (2011)):
It needs to be considered that the pedigrees, especially the ones of the older horses are often incomplete, and ABCR still works on correcting wrong parentage entries. However, since most of the work is done, these numbers can be considered as quite stable as per today. It will change with further registrations, though. More research on this topic will be done and published in the future.
We encourage all of our breeders to check the COI before breeding (we offer that as a free service to our members, non-members can buy that service, too), because a COI of below 1 % is recommended to avoid inbreeding depression within a population (DGfZ (1992)).
